The most important object in the war between Iran, Israel, and the United States last June was never photographed, because by the time the bombs fell it was almost certainly somewhere else. It weighed about 440 kilograms. It would fit in the boots of a few ordinary cars. And nearly a year later, the international body whose entire job is to know where it is has said, plainly and on the record, that it does not.
That object is Iran's stockpile of uranium enriched to 60 per cent. Hold the number in your head, because everything that matters about this war runs through it, and almost none of the coverage did. The story the world watched was a story about buildings: satellite photographs of the Fordow mountain with neat scorch marks where the bunker-busters went in, the conversion halls at Isfahan reduced to grey rubble, presidents and prime ministers saying obliterated, destroyed, brought to ruin. It was a war told in craters, because craters photograph well and a missing cylinder of metal does not photograph at all.
Start with what is actually known, because the known facts are firmer than the noise around them suggests. The IAEA estimated Iran's total enriched uranium stockpile at 9,874.9 kilograms as of 13 June 2025, the day before the strikes began. Of that, 440.9 kilograms was enriched to 60 per cent U-235. Weapons-grade is around 90. That last leap sounds like the hard part and it is not; most of the separation work is already done by the time you reach 60, and from that feedstock, with working centrifuges, the run to enough weapons-grade material for a single device is measured in days, not months. This is the single technical fact that governs everything else.
The assessments diverged almost immediately after the United States struck three sites on 22 June in an operation it called Midnight Hammer: 125 aircraft, B-2s, and the 30,000-pound penetrators that only America owns. The president said the program was obliterated. A leaked preliminary report from the Defense Intelligence Agency said the strikes set it back by months, not years. Israeli intelligence said years. The IAEA said it had seen enormous damage. These judgments did not clash because one side had facts and the others did not. They clashed because they were measuring different things while pretending they were measuring one.
The first question is how badly the halls, centrifuges, and conversion facilities were damaged. On that, the honest answer is somewhere between severe and very severe, and in strategic terms it is almost secondary. The second question is the one that counts: where is the 440 kilograms. Four days after the strikes, the most senior nuclear official on earth went on television and admitted he had no idea.
The stockpile was the bottleneck. The stockpile is the one thing they do not know the location of.
Rafael Grossi, director general of the IAEA, said publicly that the agency did not know where Iran's enriched uranium was. Iranian officials had told him they took protective measures before the strikes, which may or may not have included moving the material. The IAEA's last physical inspection at Fordow was on 10 June, three days before the war. After the strikes, Iran suspended cooperation, inspectors withdrew, and the agency lost what it calls continuity of knowledge — the careful institutional phrase for the truly alarming thing. The chain of observation broke. From that point onward, the agency was estimating rather than verifying, leaning on satellite imagery and Iranian declarations instead of a camera in the room and a seal on the cylinder.
As of the most recent reporting, that gap has not closed. The agency still cannot confirm whether Iran has resumed enrichment, and it still cannot say where the pre-war stockpile is. The man whose inspectors are meant to account for every gram of this material on the planet was reduced to asking, in public, for permission to go and look.
Then came the detail that turns the absence into something closer to a story. In March, visual investigators working with Le Monde analyzed a satellite image of Isfahan taken before the strikes. It showed a large truck loaded with containers at a site the IAEA had repeatedly flagged as a possible storage location for highly enriched uranium. The investigators were careful, as serious people are: they could not prove what the containers held. But the timing, the type of load, and the surrounding evidence pointed in one direction. Iran may have moved a significant quantity of its most dangerous material — possibly all of it — in the days before the bombs arrived.
This is the part of the war that was not seen, and it was not seen because it was designed not to be. A state that has spent twenty years anticipating exactly this attack does not leave its most valuable and most portable asset sitting under the one mountain everyone has been photographing for a decade. Enriched uranium in the form Iran holds it — uranium hexafluoride stored in steel cylinders — is not large. The 60 per cent material, all 440 kilograms of it, is small enough to move discreetly and important enough that moving it would have been the obvious first move. You cannot bomb what has already been driven away.
So consider what the strikes actually achieved, measured against the only metric that mattered. They destroyed a great deal of expensive, hard-to-replace infrastructure: centrifuge halls, conversion facilities, the physical plant of a program. That is real, and rebuilding it is slow and visible. But the centrifuges were never the bottleneck. The stockpile was. And the stockpile is the one thing that appears to have survived, because it was the one thing small enough to hide and valuable enough that hiding it was obvious. The DIA's unglamorous months may prove closer to the truth than the president's obliterated, not because the bombing failed in its own terms, but because it was aimed at the part of the problem you can see while the decisive part was the part you cannot.
There is a broader discomfort buried in this. Modern states and modern publics have an enormous appetite for the visible, the photographable, the thing that can be shown on a screen as proof that something decisive occurred. A burning facility satisfies that appetite. A cratered mountain satisfies it. Meanwhile the actual object of the entire exercise — 440 kilograms of material that determines whether a country can build a bomb — sits in an unknown location, unphotographed, unverified, and unaccounted for, because it was never the kind of thing a camera could settle.
A year on, the inspectors are still mostly locked out, the continuity of knowledge is still broken, and the honest answer to the only question that ever mattered remains the one Grossi gave on television in June: there is a question there. The most expensive air operation in recent memory was launched, in part, to answer it, and it remains unanswered because the answer was loaded onto a truck before the first plane took off.
